From a security point of view:

Big Bald Guy in the middle: teddy bear at heart. Hurt his shoulder pretty bad after the second surfer, worked the rest of the night hurt. Plays the part of the tough guy. While I'm normally the good guy.

We hate camera people. Especially when they can't stand still and insist on running back and forth in the barricade, while we're catching 200# body surfers. Normally we are very nice to opening/local acts, understand it may be the only time they play on a large stage. Strange Device wanted to come down and tape and we let them know it wasn't a problem. Normally a photo pass is good for the first 3 songs, not an entire evening, which makes things difficult on us also.

We're not all bad guys, granted some of us go on head trips. Most of us do this job for the same reasons you come to the shows. We get to hear(not see) the show and get paid. It makes a good SECOND job. Concert Security is NOT my Life.

It can be a lot of fun though. Most nights are pretty boring unless we get crowd surfing or drunk rednecks(er, intoxicated patrons). The rules we're given to enforce are insurance Rules.

We only gave out water Tuesday night because it was given to us by Eric from The Urge during the show. We have tried giving out water during other shows it normally back fires, with cups and bottles coming back at our heads and puddles to slip on as we're catching kids.

Sorry, I will step off the soapbox now.

Joe

it's cool to see/hear things from the other point of view. these shows have been pretty much the only ones where i've been in a place (right in front of you on the raised level, joe) where i can see how big of a beating the guys up front take during the course of the show, and i would totally understand if they were in a shitty mood. hell, i get in a shitty mood at work and people aren't kicking me in the nose. strangely enough, it's usually the guys off to the side of the stage that seem like they have the worst attitudes.

an idea for giving out water that i've seen at other clubs (granted this doesn't get as much water in ppl's mouths, but it gives them some water nonetheless): punch holes in the cap of the bottle and squeeze, shooting the water out at ppl. that way you don't have to worry about ppl chucking the bottles back at you.

This is gonna be terrible and probably not close to accurate, but they opened with Don't Ask Why, closed with Hectic, and in between played the following songs that I can remember in no particular order:

Brainless, All Washed Up, Where Do We Go, Drunk Asshole, Take Away, Violent Opposition, Dirty Rat, If I Were You, Straight to Hell, Jump Right In, Closer, Gene Machine, Divide and Conquer, Played Out, What is This, Too Much Stereo, Warning Warning, Welcome to Gunville, Four Letters, Liquor Store, Bark Like a Dog, One Love, and A Message to You Rudy

I think they might have played Damn that Shit is good, but all the nights are kinda running together now and I can't recall for sure.

Sorry that I got shoved away from you halfway during the Urge's set (some little bitch's boyfriend decided to shove me aside so she could get on the rail,
I think that was the same guy that tried to pull me off the rail for the first 5-6 songs of the Urge's set. That was probably the only bad part of the night, he was just being an asshole. He kept yelling that he was trying to get his g/f up on the rail, but a friend of mine said she apologized to her while he was doing all this, she was just embarrassed. A true Drunk Asshole.

I was at the 23rd and 25th and I have to second major props to both openers on the 25th. I'm gonna pick up both their discs next time I'm in the STL.

The crowd was much better on the 25th and really felt like a typical kick ass Urge crowd (people giving a hand to people that get knocked over, etc.).

Overall I'm just blown away as usual by the Urge. If the Copper show does happen on 1/31, I'll definately be there, but even if not I'm fucking psyched that I got to see the Urge for two more amazing shows!

toastcowboy- I'm just glad they didn't stay long, because I would have been fighting for my spot back... first person in line both fuckin' nights, and I didn't do that to be shoved off the rail thankyouverymuch.

theymitbg- There were only a couple of your guys that pissed me off. The rest were pretty cool, on the 23rd one loaned Ryan & I his really warm gloves (came in handy after standing outside for nearly an hour with an hour to go). A few shot the shit with us, and you of course, were fun in front of me on the rail both nights. Security guards are always going to get a bad rep for the one or two assholes who get on a power trip, but I muist say after how cool the b&d (is that right?) guys were tome both nights I'll say most of you guys are alright

my thoughts...

lojic was amazing. great show and great musicians. johnny, i'm assuming you're the bassist...you rocked. i haven't seen a bassest with that flexibility or skill in a long time. i'm kind of upset that i didn't buy a cd...i'll get around to it sooner or later.

urge rocked as normal. i have no problem with the long versions of one love or them playing the predictable gettn' hectic as closing songs. it has become their trademark and i would be upset if i didn't see them...its just something i've grown used to seeing.

crowed was better...i was on the other side of the stage so i couldn't really see or make out whether the people were booing or whatever. at first i thought it was a joke b/c of how adair handled it. props to them for being mature about it.

some of the funnier moments of the night were, first, this 18 year old getting tossed out for drinking underage and then trying to act too cool for the concert. next, some guy getting his ass kicked by two security guards and countless random good guys because he started hitting a girl for no reason in the pit.

one of the better urge concerts i've been to...the energy was up there just like the old days. rock on.

Soapbox away brother, that's what this is all about here. It is good to hear your POV.

Scott, the photographer is a good friend of mine. I've known Scott 22 years (good gawd) and you are right, he is way over zealous at times. You should see him at a wedding! Sheesh. To his defense while he got permission from the Urge to do the photography, and while he may sell some pics to them and others, he's NOT gonna make any money on it. He never has and never will. The running back and forth was because he could and he is one of the many Urge freaks out there. He takes ALOT of pictures and it gets some really great ones. The link is not to the best example, there is another where the 5 of them (John can't jump) are 3 feet in the air at the same time. You gotta be aggressive to get that kind of shot.

And you admit you hate camera people so I wouldn't take it personally if I were he. (Long time lurker here, never poster) And it sounds like maybe a combination of him and big people who have no business with their feet off the floor at a concert unless...nevermind. We've talk here alot about the max size for surfing and proper shoe wear for doing so. I got nailed with a steel toed boot one year which is why you see me with my hand over my head when in front to the pit, not just for the Urge / Love sign. I thought I was gonna die. The boot also concurs the skull

Scott is very passionate about photography AND the Urge. I'd bet many band photographers are just there to do a job.

Link to 2001 Urge Chrismas Pics

This site has about 16 of the 216 pictures he took 2 years ago at Christmas. Just the tip of the iceberg. He probably spent 200? on film and processing (forget his time since he loved every minute of it) and made ~24. They were talking about actually doing something with this set but with the Urge future tentative at best, I don't know what it would be.

Anycrap, so now we have your real point of view and my vicarious one! Now I'M off the soapbox. LOL And tell Jack the security guy that he is the shit. He was having ALMOST as much fun as we were.

I think the camera man he was referring to was probably Greg (formerly of DTP and BBM fame), not Scott, since I saw Greg down in front with his camcorder for a good chunk of the Urge's set.

I met Scott after the show down in the pit, very nice guy. When he gets all the pictures from this show done I'm going to get some samples from him and he'll be doing prints, posters, etc, like he did two years ago. Those pics turned out great and I'm sure the ones from this run will as well. Maybe now that I have a little bit of disposable income I can get something from him.

Thanks Paul, I hope it wasn't Scott. And yeah, he's a nice guy that finishes last sometimes. I'm sure he'll appreciate your shout out on the board. I'm very respectful about keeping this site non-commercial but he is one of us and providing a needed service, so he's a good exception.

On another thread you mentioned that you knew the idea for the Christmas reunion did NOT come at John's wedding. I was just wondering what you knew that told you it was untrue?

There are some great pictures of the boys at John's wedding too. They clean up pretty damn good. It was funny because the first time I saw Joe Dirty I thought they'd make a perfect wedding reception band and they do!

I guess now that the shows are all done and over with I can comment freely. First off, John's wedding was Oct 25th and the shows were officially announced on Oct 21st, big clue #1 . The first hint I got that these shows were gonna happen was sometime in August at a Joe Dirt show. Everyone but Karl and Steve was there and Mike went around and started telling each of them they needed to do a show and all of them basically said "well, if everyone else would want to do it, I guess I'd do it". That was pretty odd to me, especially coming from Bill, cause in the past he was pretty adament that he wouldn't want to do a show yet cause it was too soon. I guess the timing finally made sense. Anyway, a couple weeks after that Jerry told me that they had called Steve and presented the idea to him and he was all about it and had even been thinking of asking the rest if they wanted to do it. Karl was the only one they hadn't talked to. About a week after that Jerry told me that they had a meeting with the 5 of them here in StL to discuss and that it was pretty damn certain it would be happening. That was sometime early in September. As for John's wedding, I talked to Steve on the phone the day I saw the Dropkick Murphy's in Columbia (Sept 15 I think) and he told me the plan was for Joe Dirt to play at John's wedding and then the Urge would get up and do a few songs and make the announcement to everyone there that they would be playing the shows. You have no idea how much I had to restrain myself from just showing up at John's reception (which I found out later that other people did and it wouldn't have been a problem... DOH!).

So that's basically everything I knew and didn't tell you all . Believe me, it was pretty damn hard not spreading the word, but I feel like I've gained some trust with the guys in the band and I'm not gonna ruin that by spreading rumors.

I guess all that's left are the final tour dates, and I should have those soon. 4 weekends in Jan/Feb is the tentative schedule, all Fri and Sat nights, which is nice for the roadtripping folks. Personally, I will be at every show. I should hit 50 shows by the time they hit Columbia if the tour pans out as I've heard.

Thanks

Thanks to Paul for the post. I didn't know how that all happened.

Got to see Scott's pictures from the show a couple of nights ago. I was sick as a dog so didn't spend as much time a I would have liked. Very very cool. Paul was right, he only did one roll of film from the rail, so Scott was not the photographer talked about. He is still can be obnoxious, but so can I. Some from the balcony and some from backstage, all worth seeing. Tried to reproduce some of the blurred shots at my request but nothing as good as the one he got by accident two years ago. Got a good picture I asked for too of what was suppose to be the set list (varied a little I think) that was posted by Matt in the fly.

I'm pretty much committing to all the shows on the road as well.
